What Makes Something Psychedelic?

Before we dive into cannabis specifically, let's establish what scientists mean by "psychedelic." Classic psychedelics like LSD, psilocybin, and DMT work primarily through serotonin receptors in the brain, specifically the 5-HT2A receptor. When our budtenders at the Canoga Park location describe customer experiences with high-dose edibles or concentrates, they're often hearing about visual distortions, time dilation, and profound introspective experiences that sound remarkably similar to what you'd expect from psilocybin or LSD.

The Terpene Factor Nobody Talks About

Here's something the research often misses: terpenes. These aromatic compounds don't just provide flavor and smell — they actively modulate THC's effects through what's called the "entourage effect."

Take our Insane OG, for example. Its terpene profile is dominated by caryophyllene and limonene. Caryophyllene acts as a CB2 receptor agonist, meaning it directly binds to part of the endocannabinoid system. Limonene affects serotonin and dopamine pathways. When you combine high THC with this specific terpene cocktail, you're not just getting "stoned" — you're creating a complex neurochemical environment that can produce experiences far beyond typical cannabis effects.

Myrcene, another common terpene found in strains like Granddaddy Purple, enhances THC's ability to cross the blood-brain barrier. But at high doses, that same mechanism can lead to dissociative experiences that blur the line between cannabis and psychedelic territory.

How Users Experience Cannabis vs Psychedelics

While laboratory research provides one perspective, user experiences offer another important data point. A full survey reported by Leafly found that "75% of cannabis and psychedelic consumers reported that their cannabis experiences did not resemble experiences with psychedelics."[^3]

But that 25% who do report psychedelic-like experiences from cannabis? They're usually talking about specific scenarios: high-dose edibles, potent concentrates, or particular strain combinations. I've had customers at our La Mesa store describe 200mg edible experiences that included closed-eye visuals, profound emotional insights, and altered time perception — classic hallmarks of psychedelic experiences.

The Chemistry Behind the Confusion

So why do some people experience psychedelic-like effects from cannabis? The answer likely lies in several factors:

Dose and Potency

Modern cannabis products can contain extremely high levels of THC — far beyond what was common in previous decades. These high-potency products may push the boundaries of typical cannabis experiences.

Consider this: in the 1970s, average cannabis contained about 3-5% THC. Classic psychedelics:

  • Often associated with ego dissolution experiences
  • Generally can't be used regularly due to tolerance

Cannabis:

  • Primary action on cannabinoid (CB1/CB2) receptors
  • Perceptual changes typically more subtle
  • Maintains sense of self throughout experience
  • Can be used regularly without significant tolerance to psychoactive effects

But this molecular distinction doesn't tell the whole story. THC's effects on the brain are complex and involve multiple neurotransmitter systems. High doses can influence dopamine, serotonin, and GABA pathways — creating a neurochemical environment that overlaps with psychedelic states, even if the primary mechanism differs.

The Edible Factor: A Game Changer

When people ask me about psychedelic cannabis experiences, I often point them toward edibles — specifically, high-dose edibles. Here's why: when you smoke or vape cannabis, THC goes directly to your brain. When you eat it, your liver converts THC into 11-hydroxy-THC, a metabolite that's more potent and longer-lasting than regular THC.

11-hydroxy-THC crosses the blood-brain barrier more efficiently and has a stronger affinity for CB1 receptors. Users consistently report that high-dose edible experiences feel fundamentally different from smoking — more introspective, longer-lasting, and often more intense visually and mentally.
